Candle Care by Colonial Candle
Make sure that the surface of your table, desk, mantle, etc. is stable, level, and even, and the candle flame isn't near flammable material like curtains or magazines.
Candles burn best away from drafts. If the flame is flickering very quickly, extinguish it, then move the candle to a location free of drafts.
Choose sconces if you have young children or pets in the household. Keep all burning candles away from children and pets.
If ever you see carbon build-up on a wick, extinguish the wick, wait until wick has cooled, snip off the tip and then re-light. (Be careful to keep any debris out of the melted wax.)
Use a snuffer to extinguish candle flames. This will prevent wax from spattering, and also keep the candle wick centered.
To prevent color fading, keep candles out of direct sunlight.
Polish the surface of candles with a fine mesh stocking (pantyhose or nylons) to enhance gloss and remove scratches.
Special tips for specific types
Votives Always burn votives in a container designed for votive use to maximize candle consumption and safety. Colonial Candle votive candle holders have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Remove the metal sustainer (item that positions wick is called this) before adding another votive.
Be sure that wicks are centered. An uncentered wick could crack a glass container.
Trim wicks to 1/4 inch.
Tealights Colonial Candle's tealights are "universal" which means you can use them in all tealight holders.
Always burn tealights in an accessory designed for tealight use to maximize candle consumption and safety. Colonial Candle tealight candle holders have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Replace with a new tealight when the wax is consumed.
Handipt™ Tapers, Classic Tapers, Grande Classic Tapers Trim wicks to 1/4 inch.
Make sure these candles fit tightly into the holder, and are perfectly vertical.
Always burn tapers in a holder designed for taper use to maximize candle safety and beauty. Colonial Candle taper candle holders have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Extinguish and replace when they burn down to no less than 1 inch from the holder.
Four-Wicks Be sure to burn a Four-Wick for about six hours, so the wax liquefies to the edge of the candle, particularly for the first burning.
While the wax is still warm, gently press (or hug) the edges inward to keep the surface even.
Don't trim the wicks, but keep them positioned toward the center of the candle.
Always burn Four-Wick candles in or on a holder designed for such use to maximize candle safety and beauty. Colonial Candle candle accessories have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Round pillar candles Burn pillars long enough each time so that the wax liquefies to the edge, about one hour for each inch of diameter. (This prevents "tunneling" and gives you a bright, visible flame.)
Trim wicks to 1/4 inch. Always burn pillar candles in or on a holder designed for such use to maximize candle safety and beauty. Colonial Candle pillar candle accessories have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Discontinue use when one inch of wax remains.
Square pillar candles Corner peaks form naturally, so there's no need to shape or hug a square pillar.
Trim wicks to 1/4 inch each time you light the candle.
Always burn pillar candles in or on a holder designed for such use to maximize candle safety and beauty. Colonial Candle accessories have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Discontinue use when one inch of wax remains.
Ball candles Trim wicks to 1/4 inch each time you light the candle.
Burn a ball candle at least one hour each time so that the wax liquefies to the edges.
There is no need to hug a ball candle.
Replace with a new candle when the wax is one inch from the base.
Always burn ball candles in or on a holder designed for such use to maximize candle safety and beauty. Colonial Candle candle accessories have been rigorously tested to conform to the highest standards of safety and performance.
Wax-filled containers Trim wicks to 1/4 inch.
Burn long enough each time for the wax to liquefy to the edges of the container.
Use a snuffer, not the container lid, to snuff the flame.
Keep wicks positioned at the center of the candle. |
